When AI Writes Like Everyone Else

The Rise of the New "Delve"

Once upon a time, the most overused word in AI writing was “delve.” Every blog post and AI-generated essay promised to “delve into” a topic. Readers began to roll their eyes before reaching the second sentence. We've reviewed this before here: Enhancing AI Chatbot Variability and Engagement, noting that honorable mention went to the phrase “In a world where ____.”

Now we have a new champion: the formula “___ isn’t just ___, it’s ___.” You’ve seen it. You’ve groaned at it. Maybe you’ve even written it without realizing. The phrase has become the default seasoning mix for generative AI: sprinkle it on everything, whether it belongs or not.

Confession: We're guilty of it here too! Feel free to use the "search" tool and poke fun at the messenger here... it's kind of embarrassing to be honest...

Why This Happens

AI models are trained to imitate human writing patterns, and this construction shows up often in marketing and thought-leadership content. It creates contrast. It sounds profound. But like too much salt in a soup, the flavor overwhelms the dish when every spoonful tastes the same.

A Cooking Analogy

Imagine every chef saying: “This soup isn’t just hot, it’s comforting.” “This bread isn’t just crusty, it’s artisanal.” “This salad isn’t just fresh, it’s transformative.” After the fifteenth repetition, you’d be begging for plain toast. That’s exactly what’s happening in social feeds right now.

What To Do Instead

  • Say it straight: Instead of clever contrast, just tell the truth directly.
  • Show, don’t declare: Describe what makes your point unique instead of labeling it unique.
  • Use variety: Mix short sentences, vivid verbs, and fresh imagery. Your readers will thank you.
  • AI drafts, human re-write:  AI is outstanding at coming up with a place to start--not to finish.  Avoid letting AI run the communication:  get started, then edit.

Sometimes Repetition is Okay

Repetition is not always going to be a problem and can be a powerful tool.  One example where repetition and repetitive phrases can be helpful are their inclusion in technical manuals.  Repetition here can be a strong, useful tool that helps the reader learn what could be a more challenging concept.  Repetition can also help readers by using the same term for the same concept every time.

Feel free to use repetition when it makes sense--just know that you are using it and why.

A Playful Rewrite

To prove the point, let’s parody the cliché itself:

  • This article isn’t just a warning, it’s a public service announcement for tired readers.
  • This blog isn’t just Creative Cooking with AI, it’s Creative Comedy with AI (at least today).
  • And finally: clichés aren’t just overused, they’re… actually, no, that’s enough.

Takeaway

Generative AI can help us explore, invent, and even laugh at ourselves. The next time you’re tempted to write “isn’t just ___, it’s ___,” remember: your words can stand on their own without the crutch of formula. Mix the recipe. Stir in something new. That’s how real flavor emerges.
