Tech Tuesday: Tokenization — Why Your AI Thinks 2 Teaspoons Can Magically Become 2,000

(and why counting zeros is basically a drunk game of Jenga inside every big model)

You’ve Seen This Movie Before

Some other model tells you to double ½ teaspoon of salt and suddenly you’re using 50 teaspoons.

Same bug, different kitchen disaster.
The villain has a name: tokenization.

Tokenization, Explained with a Garlic Press

Everything you type gets shoved through a garlic press before the model ever looks at it.

  • “Preheat oven to 425°F” → becomes tiny bits like [“Pre”, “heat”, “ oven”, “ to”, “ 425”, “°F”]

The model never sees the whole number again. It only gets the pile of scraps. When it has to write the number back out, it’s basically trying to rebuild the clove from squished garlic paste. Sometimes it misses a chunk. Sometimes it adds an extra one. Dinner suffers.

Answer: “Use ½0 teaspoon salt.” → model saw roughly [“½", “0," teaspoon"] → spat out 50 teaspoons.

The cake could float a battleship.

Fixes That Are Already Shipping

  1. Tool calling – model spots math → throws it to a real calculator instead of guessing.
  2. Smarter tokenizers – newer ones waste fewer pieces on big numbers.
  3. Number-protect mode – treat measurements as single unbreakable tokens.

Until that’s universal, the rule in my kitchen (and yours) is simple:

If the number can set off the smoke alarm or make you cry, check it yourself.

Final Bite

Tokenization is why AI can dream up a Michelin-worthy sauce in seconds and then tell you to add two liters of vanilla because it lost track of a comma.

Use it for inspiration.
