Fan Fiction Friday-Eight Mouths to Feed

Eight Is Enough — The Great Dinner Debate

Alton Brown fan fiction crossover index

Fictional Story: This week's Fan Fiction Friday imagines the Bradford family discovering that feeding eight people may be one of the greatest optimization problems ever attempted.

The story is fictional and created for fun as part of the Creative Cooking with AI series.

Scene: The Bradford Kitchen

Early evening. The kitchen is busy. Tom Bradford has just arrived home from work. Abby is trying to decide what to cook while eight opinions begin arriving faster than groceries disappear.

MARY: I'd love Italian tonight.

JOANIE: Tacos!

SUSAN: Salad sounds good.

NANCY: Can we have pizza?

ELIZABETH: I vote for grilled chicken.

TOMMY: Hamburgers!

NICHOLAS: Mac and cheese!

DAVID: Whatever takes the least time.

TOM BRADFORD: That's eight opinions.

ABBY: Actually... nine.

TOM: You have one too?

ABBY: I'd just like everyone to agree for once.

A Visitor Arrives

The doorbell rings.

ALTON BROWN: Good evening!

TOM: Alton Brown?

ALTON: I happened to hear someone mention dinner for a family of ten.

ABBY: Eight children.

ALTON: My mistake. That's even harder.

TOM: You have an idea?

ALTON: Well--I brought an experiment!

He places a tablet on the kitchen counter.

ALTON: This AI meal planner asks everyone what they enjoy, what ingredients are already available, how much time you have, and your grocery budget.

TOMMY: Can it make hamburgers?

ALTON: It recommends. you decide.

TOM: I like that already.

The Results

The tablet processes everyone's answers.

AI: Recommendation complete.

ABBY: Let's hear it.

AI: Build-your-own taco and rice bowl night.

MARY: That's not Italian.

AI: Add Italian-seasoned grilled chicken.

JOANIE: Tacos!

SUSAN: Plenty of vegetables.

NANCY: Cheese?

AI: Optional.

ELIZABETH: Grilled chicken?

AI: Included.

TOMMY: Ground beef?

AI: Included.

NICHOLAS: Rice?

AI: Included.

DAVID: How long?

AI: Thirty-two minutes using ingredients already available.

ABBY: That's... surprisingly practical.

Alton Explains

ALTON: The goal isn't to cook eight dinners. The goal is to identify ingredients that support many different meals.  Restaurants do this every day, home kitchens can too.

TOM: So the computer didn't solve dinner.

ALTON: It organized the options.

ABBY: We still choose.

ALTON: Exactly.

One More Request

TOMMY: Can the AI decide dessert?

AI: Recommendation: Chocolate brownies.

NICHOLAS: I wanted ice cream.

MARY: Brownies with ice cream.

AI: Recommendation updated.

TOM: I think it's learning.

ALTON: Actually...

ALTON: I think your family is.

Closing Scene

Thirty-five minutes later, the kitchen table is full.

Some plates hold tacos. Others hold rice bowls. A few feature extra vegetables. One has almost nothing but cheese.

ABBY: Everyone happy?

The family nods while eating.

TOM: That's the quietest dinner we've had all week.

ALTON: Good systems help families spend more time together.

TOM: Same time next week?

AI: Recommendation saved.
